Shop Signs Sheffield Get Great Opportunity with New Plans for Sheffield’s Retail Quarter

As many Sheffield residents will know, plans for the £400 million Sevenstone shopping centre were put on hold last year, after the chosen developer Hammerson failed to deliver the scheme in the city centre. Sheffield Council originally intended to find a new developer but then decided to revisit the plans that were drawn up, putting the project firmly on hold as the recession set in.

As experienced designers and manufacturers of shop signs Sheffield, we were obviously disappointed to see the plans shelved. The opportunity for the regeneration of the city centre was an exciting prospect, and it’s a real shame that it has been on hold for such a long time.

Regeneration of Sheffield Retail Quarter

That’s why we were over the moon to read the news in the Sheffield Star that the long-awaited retail quarter will finally become a reality, as Sheffield Council are fighting to buy back the properties in the area between Pinstone Street, Moorhead and Barkers Pool from the previous developers Hammerson. The council has also confirmed that the demolition work on the buildings in the area could start at early as 2015, with the expected completion date set to be some time in 2019-2020.

Cabinet member for business, Councillor Leigh Bramall said: “This is the first key milestone in developing the scheme. We wouldn’t be making this commitment to purchasing the land without confidence that we were going to deliver the scheme and move forward with it.”

Nightclub Closure to Make Room for New Retail Quarter

Embrace Nightclub closed recently to make way for the retail plans, shutting its doors after 14 years are one of Sheffield’s most popular nightspots. Jason Brook, for Embrace, said “We fully support the development of the New Retail Quarter, that is vital for Sheffield and we commend the pro-active approach that the local authority has taken recently in moving proposals forward.”

It sounds like a really exciting project that could potentially breathe much needed life into the city centre of Sheffield. At the moment, there are several empty retail units with old Sheffield shop signs above them. It would be great to have a busy, vibrant shopping area again, with a selection of quality shops, bars and restaurants.
