Business signage explainer – what is a 3D sign?
And is a 3D sign the right sign for my business?
When you want your business to stand out on a busy high street, you need a sign that people notice immediately. A 3D sign, often called built-up lettering in the trade, gives you exactly that. It is a physical, thick structure that projects away from your building rather than sitting flat against the wall. This helps your business look established, professional, and permanent.
How Built-Up Letters ARE PRODUCED
We do not just cut a flat shape out of a piece of plastic. We build a hollow, physical box for every single letter or part of your logo. First, we cut the front face. Then we shape the sides, known as the returns, to match the exact outline of the letter. Finally, we join the front and sides to a back panel. This creates a thick, three-dimensional shape.
This physical depth is the whole point of a 3D sign. Standard signs are usually 3 millimetres thick. Built-up letters are normally between 50 and 100 millimetres deep. They stick out from the brickwork and cast real shadows. This works perfectly to catch the eye of people walking or driving past your premises.
The Difference BETWEEN 3D LETTERS AND Flat SIGNS
A flat sign is a single printed board. It does the job, but it has limits. Because a flat board sits flush to the wall, it becomes hard to read from a sharp angle. A built-up 3D sign solves this. Because the letters project outward, they interrupt the line of sight for people walking down the pavement.
The hollow space inside a 3D letter also serves a practical purpose. We use this cavity to hide electrical wiring and LED lights. You cannot hide wiring inside a flat board. But with a built-up letter, we pack the inside with waterproof electrics to make the sign glow at night, keeping everything neat and out of sight.
Materials That Survive The British Weather
A heavy sign needs to last. We only use industrial-grade materials that handle heavy rain, freezing winters, and direct summer sun. Choosing the right material guarantees your sign stays safe and looks sharp for years.
Industrial Metals For The Frame
We build the main structure of your 3D letters using tough metals. Stainless steel is the standard choice. It does not rust, and it provides immense structural strength. For businesses near the coast, we use marine-grade stainless steel to stop salt corrosion. We finish the steel to match your branding. A brushed finish gives a raw, industrial look, while a polished mirror finish gives a traditional corporate appearance.
We also use solid aluminium. Aluminium is much lighter than steel, which helps when we need to fit very large letters to an older building. We powder-coat the aluminium in the workshop. This process bakes your exact brand colours into the metal, preventing the paint from fading or chipping in the sun.
Acrylic Faces For Lighting
When you want an illuminated sign, we use thick commercial acrylic for the front faces of the letters. This material survives the weather without turning yellow or brittle. More importantly, it diffuses light perfectly.
When we put LED modules inside the metal letter, the acrylic face spreads that light evenly. You do not see bright dots from the individual bulbs. You just see a solid, bright glow. We use coloured acrylic or apply specialist translucent vinyl to match your exact company colours.
Making It Glow At Night
The biggest advantage of a 3D sign is the lighting. If your business operates after dark, you need illumination. Unlit signs disappear as soon as the sun goes down. Built-up letters give you two primary ways to light up your shop front.
Halo Lighting For A Subtle Look
Halo lighting gives your business a high-end, sophisticated appearance. For this setup, we make the front and sides of the letter from solid metal. The light cannot push through the front. Instead, we mount the letters about an inch away from your wall. We point the internal LEDs backward.
When you switch the power on, the light washes against the brickwork behind the sign. This creates a bright, glowing outline around every dark letter. It looks sharp and makes the text perfectly readable at night without being blindingly bright. This works brilliantly for restaurants, offices, and premium retail shops.
Face Illumination For Maximum Impact
If you want to dominate a retail park or a busy road, you need face illumination. For this method, we make the sides of the letter from metal but keep the front face made of acrylic. We point the internal LEDs forward.
The light pushes directly through the front of the letter and out into the street. The entire face of your sign glows brightly. We use low-voltage, energy-efficient LED modules for all our signs. They cost very little to run and produce no heat, making them completely safe to leave on all night.
The Realities Of Cost And Fitting
A 3D sign is a serious investment. It costs more than a flat board because of the heavy manual labour required to build it. But it pays for itself by bringing in more customers who trust the look of your business.
Budgeting For The Build
You must plan your budget accordingly. We build every 3D sign from scratch. Our fabrication team manually cuts, folds, and welds the metal for every single letter. Then, our electrical team wires and tests the lighting systems. This process takes time and skill.
All signage is produced bespoke in the Image Sign workshop to meet exact customer requirements. Because we handle the whole process in-house, we control the quality completely. We test the electrics and check the seals before the sign ever leaves the workshop.
Safe And Secure Wall Mounting
Heavy metal letters require highly secure fitting. You cannot attach them to a rotten wooden fascia. We survey your building to ensure the wall takes the weight safely. Image Sign provides a full end-to-end service, covering both design and professional installation.
Our fitting team uses precise paper templates to ensure the letters sit perfectly level. We drill into the brickwork and use heavy-duty steel threaded rods to lock the sign in place. We then push all the electrical cables through the wall cavity, hiding them completely from the outside. We wire everything to a safe transformer inside your building, leaving you with a flawless, working sign.property immediately.
