50 Years Of Success – It Must Be A Good Sign!

Tomorrow marks the start of the London Design Festival for 2015, until the 27^th September.  This event collaborates design and creative geniuses from across the country, showcasing an array of designs from our built environment, functional daily items and decorative luxury items.  This year is going to be even bigger than it has ever been before, with around 400 events, and is free for anyone to attend.  One of the biggest exhibitions to explore this year installed at the Design Museum is that of the 50 years of British road signs, designed by Calvert and Kinneir.  This free exhibition is celebrating with the installation of both new and original signs, along with archived material which has been curated by Made North.

Where Did Road Signs Originate From?

50 years ago, new-fangled motorways were being built, cars were now becoming more affordable and us Brits were on the move more so and quicker than ever before, but the road signs were not making this move easy!  This resulted in being discussed at the 1931 Geneva Convention in a discussion named “Concerning the Unification of Road Signals” – where the need for visual not verbal road signals were made important.  This was due to wordy signals being impossible to read in dim lighting, bad weather conditions or at high speed so the ministry took note.  They asked Hyde Park graphic designer, Jock Kinneir, to design new signs for them with the aid of his young pupil, Margaret Calvert, who later became his business partner.  So, in 1965, sent round the country was a leaflet named “The New Traffic Signals” which was the turning point in British signage and modernity, which amazingly have kept the Kinneir and Calvert names alive today, as their designs have remained near enough unchanged 50 years on.
