New £480m Sheffield City Centre Shopping District Plans Revealed
According to a recent article in the Sheffield Star, new plans have been announced for a £480 million shopping district that is set to transform Sheffield’s city centre. Streets such as Pinstone Street and Cross Burgess Street will be home to new contemporary fashion stores, setting the tone for the whole of the city centre. In addition, there will be a new anchor department store, along with plenty of new retail and leisure outlets.
Attractive New Shopping Area in Sheffiel
Simon Green, who is Sheffield Council’s executive director for place commented on the plans, saying that they will provide a new, attractive shopping area for the centre of Sheffield. “The design merges with Sheffield’s award-winning public spaces and world renowned cultural assets – including City Hall, The Crucible and The Lyceum theatres – and links key retail pitches in the city centre from The Moor through to Fargate. This will complement the new shopping facilities and provide food and drink, office and residential space to extend the city centre’s attraction as an evening entertainment option.
Scepticism from Sheffield Residents
As shop sign makers in Sheffield, we’ve commented before on the many plans that Sheffield Council have dreamt up and then shelved over the past few years. It will be interesting to see if this project gets off the ground, as many others have fallen to the wayside for various reasons. The reaction from Sheffield residents is understandably cool; they’ve seen plans announced before that have never materialised, and many are sceptical about the future of these new developments.
Boosting Business for Nearly Shopping Areas
Sheffield was ranked as 43rd in the UK in a recent retail study, alongside towns such as Northampton and Stoke on Trent. But the new plans will hopefully see it jumping to 32nd. The scheme is also expected to boost business for other popular shopping areas in the city, for example the Devonshire Quarter and The Moor. According to the newspaper, the council is currently in conversation with potential strategic development partners, and is hoping to announce their chosen partner in autumn of this year.
